Ingredients

  • 1 cup Land O Lakes® Unsalted Butter softened to room temperature
  • 3 tbsp milk
  • 2 tbsp finely chopped fresh herbs parsley, green onions, and rosemary
  • 2 garlic cloves minced
  • flaky sea salt to taste
  • 2 tbsp blackberry or strawberry jam
  • Baguette slices breadsticks, or crackers, for serving

Instructions

  • Whip the butter. Using an electric mixer, beat the softened butter and milk on medium-high speed for 4–7 minutes, until pale, light, and fluffy.
  • Add the flavor. Gently fold in the fresh herbs, minced garlic, and flaky sea salt until combined.
  • Shape the ghost. Transfer the whipped butter to a piping bag (or ziplock bag if you don't have a piping bag). On a clean serving board or platter, pipe the outline of a ghost, then fill in the center with the remaining butter. Smooth with a spatula as needed.
  • Add the eyes. Spoon small amounts of blackberry or strawberry jam onto the butter to create the ghost's eyes.
  • Serve. Arrange baguette slices, breadsticks, and crackers around the ghost and enjoy!

Notes

Food safety note: Because this recipe contains dairy and fresh garlic, keep it refrigerated until shortly before serving and don’t leave it at room temperature for more than 2 hours.

Tips for Making This Recipe

  • Use properly softened butter. Room-temperature butter is key to getting that light, fluffy texture. It should be soft enough to press with your finger but not melted.
  • Make it ahead. Whip the butter up to 2 days in advance and refrigerate in an airtight container. Let it soften slightly and rewhip if needed before piping your ghost.
  • Don’t add too much milk. Start with the recommended amount and whip thoroughly. Too much liquid can make the butter difficult to pipe and prevent your ghost from holding its shape.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make this butter board ahead of time?
Yes! You can prepare the whipped butter up to 2 days in advance. Store it in the refrigerator and allow it to soften slightly before piping. For the best presentation, add the jam eyes just before serving.
Can I use different herbs or seasonings?
Absolutely! Fresh chives, thyme, or basil work beautifully. You can also add a little lemon zest, roasted garlic, or grated Parmesan for extra flavor.
What can I serve with a Boo-ter Board?
Toasted baguette slices, sourdough bread, breadsticks, pretzels, and buttery crackers are all great options. I love offering a variety so everyone has something to dip or spread!
